Injured Reserve

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."
-Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It

I've had some tough luck as of late in the running department. I took a bad fall on the trails last Tuesday and banged up my right knee pretty bad. Much worse than I initially thought. I ran on it the next day trying to suck it up, but after eleven painful miles I succumbed to the realization which I should have mastered beforehand. I am hurt and my body needs time to rest. Admittedly it has been a frustrating week as I do not do well mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and the obvious, physically, when I am not running. At least I can admit that I suppose. Knowing full well that there are greater tragedies facing our modern world than my not running, I did the next best thing in effort of moving past my pitiful neuroticism; go fishing.

Here are some pictures from my revisiting of my first love from this past weekend:

  1. adam,

I hate to hear that about your knee! but just rest and recover, and you'll be back stronger than ever! I know how hard that can be ( to be patient) but you'll come out to the good in the end by not running hurt.

love the pictures!! both WV and SWVA WEIRDOS RAWK!!!

getting ready to go on a 42 mile night run with the IMTR's this weekend in preparation for cheat mtn! WOO! ( my first night run! )

  2. Adam, I hate to hear about your latest tumble. Jenny is correct that you just need to be patient and let your body heal. You will be fine. In regards to you being unlucky, I have a solution for that. When a person is moving more quickly and they fall, their momentum carries to the ground and their fall is harder. Now, if you will slow down to my speed, then your falls will not be as forceful. Just a thought. Hope the knee feels better soon. Remember to ice and be nice to Kadra during your down time. Rick

Jenny, As you say, you are going to "RAWK" Friday night. We are going to have a blast. This will certainly help your preparation and comfort level in running our much anticipated Cheat Mountain 50 miler. See you Friday night, Rick

  4. Wow! Sounds like a great run; 42 miles at night! That's a pretty stout training run, but those are the ones that I like the most; even more than races. You guys have fun while I am begrudgingly on the mend, but making sure that I am nice to my wife all the while (Rick). One of these days I just may have to make the trip south for one of these fun trainers. I'm sure you'll have some good stories to share from the upcoming weekend on the IMTR blog.

  5. Adam, We are starting at 9:00pm Friday night at Sundogs in Damascus. Funny how there is a certain race that starts at 9:00pm. I have to help Jenny get use to going running at that hour. Anyway, back to where we are going. Start at Sundogs, head on the Creeper Trail past the gazebo (where the Iron Mountain 50 miler starts), then hit about a 1/4 mile of pavement to the AT trail head. Head south on the AT to Cross Mountain. At Cross Mountain the AT crosses highway TN highway 91. There is an AT parking lot there where I am meeting Dennis Norris and Eva Gonzales. They will leave their car there and will run point to point for around 20 miles. Dennis has been injured for some time and this is his first long run. At this parking lot, I will put out aid for us to have when we get here. After we leave the parking lot, we will follow a paved road for a little over a mile to the Iron Mountain trail head. We will follow the Iron Mountain trail (going North) all of the way back to Damascus. Once in Damascus, we will have about a 1/2 mile of pavement until we get back to Sundogs. You have been on the Iron Mountain trail going North out of Damascus. For the most part, we will have nothing but single track trail. The Iron Mountain trail is pretty technical, so we will get alot of practice with the rocks. Other than the one aid drop, we are all on our own. All but about 10 miles of this run are in TN (NE TN Jenny). The Iron Mountain trail in TN and VA use to be the AT, until it was relocated in the early 1970's. This will be a great training run for everyone and I know that everyone is looking forward to it. Those running are: Jenny, Beth, Eva, Dennis, JJ, Doug and myself. We might have a couple more show up. We should have a clear night with temps in the upper 30's. No speed records will be set as we are planning on just staying together for a wonderful evening and morning in the woods.

  6. Wow, that sounds awesome. You guys are lucky to live close enough to each other to share in such an adventure. I hope you all have a blast.

I just got some good news this morning. I became an uncle again!

  7. Adam,
First, Congrats on becoming an uncle again! Uncle/Aunt is one of the best jobs on the planet!
Sorry to hear about your knee, hope it heals up quickly for you. Glad to see you are getting out and about with the incredible days we've been having around here. I'll second the be nice to Kadra sentiment...though I know you will. I don't see too many couples as perfectly suited to each other as the two of you are!

  8. Congratulations Adam. Lori is certainly right about the best job on the planet. I am sure you fill that role with perfection. We are very lucky that so many of us live close enough together to do things like that. Just got word that Jim Cobb is coming up from South Carolina to join us. Another buddy to join in on all of the fun.

  9. Lori,
Thanks for the kind words. I'll be back in action before too long. Patience is not my strongest virtue, but I'm working on it.
