Frozen Sasquatch 50K

Well the sasquatch was definitely frozen for the Frozen Sasquatch 50K yesterday. Starting temps around 17 degrees made for a fun day slip sliding around in the snow-covered Kanawha State Forest in Charleston, WV. RD Mike Dolin (above on right) did a great job directing this inaugural event with the weather presenting him some extra challenges this year.

I ran a solid race and finished 4/5 minutes back from my friend and Montrail athlete Eric Grossman (above left) for second place overall in 4:34 and change. The course is a two loop course and I came through the first loop just as Eric was leaving the aid station; somewhere around 2:14. We ran close together for the first climb, then Eric handily dropped me on the next downhill stretch never to be seen again until the finish line. I ran well on the second lap, but knew I was nowhere near the even splits that it would take to catch Eric. I was happy with the race and to finish somewhat closely behind Grossman. Anytime someone is beaten by Eric and it's only a "few" minutes, consider it a good day!

Check out results and pictures HERE and some photos that Kadra took HERE.

It was great to start the year out right with a 50K! I was pleasantly surprised by this fitness test and I'm excited to see what I can do in 2010.

  2. Adam, Great to see you and Kadra Saturday. Mike did an excellent job with the race and I look forward to making it an annual tradition. You ran great under pretty tough conditions and I can tell you are looking forward to a great running year. Be safe out there in the snow. Rick

  3. Great job, Adam! Any race you can finish with a beard-cicle is a good one, in my opinion!

  4. Kim,
Yes it was cold!...but it's even colder now and showing no signs of letting up.

    Rick,
Always great seeing you and Tammy as well. Hope to see you next month at HL.

    Dan,
It's definitely all about the beard-cicle....why else have a beard?

  10. Great job Adam! Love the icicle beard. Total respect for those doing 50k in the winter. This is 5k season for me. Believe it or not I like to work on speed during the chilly temps...or maybe it's just so freakin' cold, my body moves faster in order to get to the warm drinks afterward:-)

  11. Adam,
To those unaware of the late raceday events, I give you much thanks. Not only did you finish second to a great runner on a great course, you aided another two runners after waiting around for a couple of hours. I had not met you previously, but it was certainly my pleasure as you helped the others( Dennis, Dan, Susan,Mike and one other unnamed runner)get me down Teaberry trail with a severly damaged ankle. I have not previously posted any comments, but I wanted to express my thanks to all of you and to Mike and Ashley Dolin for a great course and race. I hope to be back on the trails as soon as possible.

  12. Rick,
I was just happy that you weren't hurt worse than you were/are. What was the official diagnosis; broken/sprained?
You are one tough dude to gut it across the finish line like that. Great to finally meet you Rick and I wish you a speedy recovery.
See you on the trails soon,
    Adam

  13. Adam,

Thanks for your kind comments. Unfortunately, after the initial visit with the urgent care doctor and radiologist which indicated no broken bones, a visit to an orthopedic specialist eight days later revealed a broken tibia approximately 2 inches above my ankle. Recovery will take much longer than anticipated as I am now in a boot cast. Despite the layoff and pain, I really enjoyed the race and am quite pleased to have finished the Sasquatch 50k. I hope to be back on the trails before summer. It looks like you had a lot of fun at the winter run.
    Happy trails to you,
    Rick

  14. Rick,
I'm sorry to hear about the layoff, but this will make for one great story down the road. When you're 80, you can brag that you FINISHED an ultra with a broken leg. If that's not TOUGH then I don't know what is!
    Heal up fast,
    Adam
